Alice Springs Aboriginal Art

Alice Springs is the Northern Territory’s third largest town, situated in the geographic centre of Australia near the southern border of the Northern Territory. The site is known as Mparntwe to the local Aboriginal people, the Arrente, who are the traditional inhabitants.

Three major Aboriginal groups: the Western, Eastern and Central Arrernte people live in Central Australia, their traditional land including the area of Alice Springs and MacDonnell Ranges. Their neighbours include the Southern Arrernte, Luritja, Anmatyerr, Alyawarr and Western Arrernte peoples.

As Alice Springs is the regional hub of Central Australia, it attracts Aboriginal artists from across all of the central region and well beyond. Many Aboriginal people visit regularly to use the town’s services. Alice Springs has many Town Camps where visitors from all around the desert regions reside.

Established art centres, galleries and art studios cater to visiting Aboriginal artists who wish to work while staying in Alice Springs. Many well-known artists have their principal place of residence in the town, and make regular visits back to communities and outstations to visit relatives.
