About the Artist

Pintupi artist Makinti Napanangka (1932- 2011) capped off her successful career with recognition at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in 2008, taking out the top award at the 25th Year of the NATSIAA event.  Makinti Napanangka had formalised her images of the hair string belts that the women wore during ceremony, developing a pattern of twisting bands of colour. The hair string belts have become a symbolic reference to the dancing of the women during ceremonies.

The belts, worn above the hips have dangling strings, often with feathers attached, which swing about as the women dance, highlighting their attractiveness. Makinti distills body-paint designs to their quintessential forms, with loose and looping rhythms that stretch out to the confines of the frame. The paintings often depict the designs associated with the rockhole site at Lupulnga, south of Kintore, and with the travels of the two Ancestor women, Kungka Kutjarra.
