Queenie McKenzie is closely associated with the country of her birth on Old Texas Station, on the western bank of the Ord River in the East Kimberley in Western Australia. Queenie was also known as Mingmarriya, named after the limestone hills country near Dingo Springs, which was her uncle's country.
Queenie worked as a stock camp cook for nearly forty years on New Texas Downs, and built up an intimate knowledge of this locality. The Texas landscape and the traditional stories that belonged there were much loved by Queenie and she frequently painted this subject.
