COLOURS FROM THE EAST MEET COLOURS FROM THE WEST

Japingka Gallery invites you to two new exhibitions. Wangkatjungka painters and glass artist, Summer Sanders, to attend the opening.

Gallery1 - Wangkatjungka artists
Japingka Gallery welcomes the return of the Wangkatjungka artists to warm up the winter months with their vibrant canvases. These new works by well-loved painters from the Great Sandy Desert, including Biddee Baadjo, Nora Tjookootja, Willie Kew, Nada Rawlins, Penny K Lyons and Rosie Goodjie, build on themes of Country and clan ownership that link the artists back to their homelands.

The artists are all part of the generation that walked out of the desert along the Canning Stock Route in the 1930s, 40s and 50s and who mainly relocated on cattle stations in the north east Kimberley region. The Wangkatjungka Community, where they now live, is located on Christmas Creek between Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing.

Along with individual artworks the exhibition includes several dramatic new collaborative canvases. These large works provide a holistic picture of the vast desert country left behind, made up of the artists' representations of their individual ancestral sites.

Exhibiting for the first time are two emerging elders from the Wangkatjungka Community, Rita Thomas and Nada May Rawlins, both of whom have forged distinctive and original styles.

The Wangkatjungka Community has a long-standing relationship with Japingka Gallery. In 2001 the Community approached Japingka to represent them and promote their work to a wider audience. In this capacity, Japingka has organised exhibitions for the artists in all capital cities in Australia, as well as selling works to national and international collectors and assisting in the process of creating exhibitions.

Gallery2 - Summer Sanders glass works
Summer Sanders, from Glass Mob Studios in Albury Wodonga, exhibits her latest works in kiln formed glass. These works are inspired by the site at Manara, an important ceremonial place for the Ngiaampa/Barkindji people. In her luminous glassworks, the artist has recreated the colours and topographical structures of country near Menindee in western NSW.

The exhibitions open this Friday 11 June 2010 at 6.30pm and remain open daily until Wednesday 21st July 2010.
